Although New Zealand does not share antipodal points on the earth with the U.S., it is part of a region commonly referred to as "Antipodes." Just as seasons in the Southern Hemisphere are completely transposed, I found upon arriving that many things in Antipodes were very different from what I was accustomed to in the Northern Hemisphere. The Logo itself is designed with this in mind. A rough-edged swirl or anti-cyclone symbolizes the rugged beauty of New Zealand and the backward spin that weather patterns (and draining water down a basin) have in the Southern Hemisphere. The swirl also has an additional level of meaning alluding to the Koru from Maori traditional art, which signifies rebirth and renewal. It is symbolic of a newly formed fern frond as it grows and matures. The Maori society predated the more recent English settlement by many hundred years. The native Maori language and art and have recently enjoyed a rebirth and has become a part of New Zealand's national identity. New Zealand, for those in the U.S., is an independent country in the South Pacific ocean. It is a part of the Australasian region and a part of the British Commonwealth of nations. English is spoken primarily, but Maori is also recognized as an official language. The population is just over 4 Million people, which is quite small by world standards. It is, however, one of the most progressive societies of the world in both culture, art & architecture and literature and enjoys one of the highest quality of life standings in the world. It has a range of climates from the subtropical North to the alpine South with some of the world's most beautiful and untouched beaches. For more information of New Zealand click here. |
